NNCC - Ed Stetzer

OK, I had a hard time taking notes on Ed. If there was a speed limit on talking the guy would be in Jail for Reckless driving.

Our desire is:
  1. To help you learn how to recognize and them build a biblically driven, culturally relevant church.
  2. Leave thinking more strategically
  3. Be aware you are not supposed to do the same things others have done

What is a biblically driven church look like in your context?
A Biblically sound church will look different as it is missionally applied.
  1. Contend for the faith once delivered to the saints, Jude 3, 1Cor 9:22-23
  2. Contextualize.

  • Good theology leads to good missiology.
  • Don’t plant a church if you are not settled and sound.
  • We need to redevelop a missiology mindset for north America.
  • What does a biblically faithful church look like in our culture?
  • How does the word become flesh in every cultural context? A struggle every time.
  • We must commit to thinking through tough issues of how the local church can contextualize the gospel.
  • What is the nature of the gospel and how is it lived out in this cultural situation.
  • Just as God is a missionary God so the church is to be a missionary church
  • God is a sender buy nature.
  • God exists for mission.
  • Jesus was the sent one.
  • As the father has sent me so send it You.
  • Jesus is the embodiment of the mission.
  • The church is the instrument of that mission.
  • The culture is the context in which that mission occurs.
  • 1Pet 2:9 you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood . . .
  • We have to be intentional to engage the culture
  • We must be focused on the mission of God.

  • Obstacle - Love or despise the culture too much.
    • The Baptist and Methodist churches were once considered scandalous on the western frontier church planting movements. Now they are in decline.
  • Tradition is an obvious and frequent barrier.
  • There is also an obstacle of technique. Some techniques don’t work in some places but do work in other places.
    • Most cp’s aren’t compromising the gospel but they are crowding it out with tips, tricks, and technique.
3 things to think about for biblical balance:
  1. Be Biblically faithful
  2. Be Culturally relevant
  3. Be a Counter cultural community for the kingdom and the glory of God.
